York Barbell |
Lead | |

I'm heading to York Barbell on June 27th if all goes according to plans, with a friend of mine who will be competing there. I can't wait to check out
the Hall Of Fame. Lots of cool stuff there!

York blobs and globe-blobs/hammers are the only iron I play with, aside from very light dumb bells. Throwing, 'putting,' and flinging a York blob down a trail will hit the whole body, from calves, to quads, glutes, erector spinae, pecs, delts, grip, etc… while generating a tremendous amount of sweat. If you scurry along and do MA movements, then there will not be a single muscle you'll wonder about having exercised. York blobs should be in every sporting good store, IMO (not the hex ones.) I heard someone released a BLOB50, but I'd like to see all of the York round dumb bells' weights available as blobs. |

Chris, that should be interesting! I have the book "Muscletown USA" about Hoffman and the York team. I'm now reading "Legacy of Iron"
by Brooks Kubik about the training methods of the old York legends, Grimek, Stanko, etc. In my teens I subscribed to "Strength and Health" for years.
I wish that I had them still. Here's an interesting site http://www.brookskubik.com/

The blob? | ||
|
I remember the scary movie, but not familiar with the equipment ( darn, I thought I knew everything) I'll have to look into that one! Rubber,
I am a fan of Brooks K. There was a thread here a while back about his dinosaur training. He's a man after my own heart in many ways, but almost a little too gung-ho |

The return of the blob | ||

OK,
I looked it up, basically one head of an older style dumbbell ( York, of course) . Found an interesting write up here: http://www.straighttothebar.com/2008/07/the_many_types_of_blobs.html |

The degree of difficulty required to lift a 50 lb York blob 1" off of the ground by its face, or via pinch grip can not be appreciated by a pic, video, or
narrative. You've got to see it to believe it.
I have a 40 lb one and am still at the point where I'm thinking I'd have a better chance at developing my NERVE-FORCE to levitate this thing mentally, rather than gripping it off of the ground. It's a fun 'impossible' task to throw yourself at, and you won't get all 'busted-up' like a bumbling bench presser to acquire that strong arm. Attached is a pic to get an idea of it's size next to typical grip stuff you've probably handled. Picture lifting up a 40-50 lb bowling ball with its holes drilled to the limits of your finger tips and they slant outward and away, vice straight-down. The isometric grip required to do this is pretty intense.

Hey Upbuilder,
pretty cool stuff.. all your personal stuff? I'm looking for pics for my online collection on my forum. http://christianiron.com/forum.aspx
I'd love to have you post that stuff here( it's the 6th thread down on the public forum), and/or anything else like it. |

Hey Fatman,
Thanks, but I will not be competing in this one. I am going to help out a new friend, and I figured being able to tour the HOF at the same time would be a great added bonus. I'll try to bring back some pics, etc |

Upbuilder, the top right spring loaded dumbell is from the "Sandow Developer". I used to have one but the rubber and cloth strands detiorated quickly
from stretching. I also found a pair of Sandow's ergonomic spring loaded dumbells in a thrift store.

Christianiron wrote: Christian iron, get plenty of pics on your trip next week! Looking forward to a report. Yes those items are mine. There is a variety of blobs and chopped-up globe dumb bells in my collection used only for throwing and carrying while walking, for grip workout and all-out, full-body exertion type moves. They give a nice approximation of what a person feels like when you're launching them through the air with all you've got. I know it's a sacrilege to chop-up globes into balls & hammers, but they work so good for plyometrics, &c… that they are sacrificed. They can be welded back together at any time, as well. You can use the pic on your site. Keep in mind when my yuku folders get large & unwieldy, I delete them. Sometimes the pics don't stick into the postings, sometimes they persist. Rubberbus, the Sandow grippers came with springs, vice bungees. They had a chord that ran through the inside of them as a limiter, but they were all dry-rotted. 3 of those 4 spring dumb bells are Sandow's. The one with the red grip is my favorite. It is used in numerous ways to exercise the fingers, palm, thumb, and hand, aside from the dumb bell-type movements. The springs pop-out and modern springs of high-tension can be used. |

In the mid 70's, York had a distribution center in Southern California but it only survived a few years.

That's great photo show, thanks for sharing. Tommy Kono is in the 8th photo and I believe the other two lifters are Clyde Emerich (current or recently
retired strength coach for the Chicago Bears) and Dave Shepherd. I've sent the link to Tommy Kono asking him to confirm. I'm sure he will enjoy the
photos.
A comment aside, your forum can be difficult at times to navigate, particularly with your yuku conversion. Maybe one of these days you can smooth it out a bit. Again, thanks for sharing and have a great day!

Christian,
Glad to hear your buddy Dave did so well. Thanks for all the pics. Definitely a place to visit. Saw pics of Adrian Peter Schmidt & Apollo in there. Just picked up an old Apollo book on Jiu Jitsu & some Hoffman book(lets) on iso's for football & golf. It's enjoyable to look at these things and get an idea of what these old-timers viewed strength & health to be. Taking stock in much of what's published these days is a stretch. Your pics would be welcomed by Roger on the Sandowplus site, too. |

I'm surprised that they had feats of strength by Charles Atlas but didn't include Jack Lalanne.
"The feats of George ronald, George "The Russian Lion" Hackenschmidt, Hermann Gorner, Milo Steinborn, the Saxon and Osman trios, Bernard Macfadden, Charles Atlas, and Joseph Greenstein, the traveling Mighty Atom" who finished his act biting through nails", are detailed beside the accomplishments of strongmen Sigmund Klein and George Jowett, whose respective famous gymnasium and physical culture books spread the word. Jack Lalanne | ||

Hey Rubber,
Jack Lalanne was on a plaque of greats but did not have a huge writeup. The writing on the plaques was small and would not have made a great photo, so I bypassed. I have much respect for Jack, still going strong at 94, last I heard. |
